  • At this appointment we start with a conversation and then photograph your teeth, following this we discuss the photos taken of your smile to find out what you don’t like and what you want to change. From here we will discuss how to build your new smile, what can be achieved and an approximate cost.

  • No, Invisalign can be, but not always, slower than traditional train track braces. Your Invisalign doctor will want to review how your teeth are moving, usually with a review appointment about once every four weeks. At these visits the movement of your teeth and fit of aligners is assessed to make sure you are on track to your new smile!

  • On average Invisalign treatment takes around 6 months. Invisalign can take anywhere between 2 months and 12 months before treatment is complete.

  • Invisalign is more likely to be less painful than traditional braces as there is no rubbing of wires and brackets against the cheeks or gums. Initially, you will feel pressure and the ‘attachments’ can cause some discomfort and ulceration.

    Any type of brace/tooth movement will cause some discomfort when pressure is applied to a tooth. However, you soon get used to this and the pressure you feel when the teeth are moving is somewhat addictive. Patients tend to enjoy the feeling of the teeth moving!

  • These are little ‘buttons’ of white filling material bonded to your tooth for treatment and then removed after treatment is complete.

    These may be needed in different shapes and sizes on different teeth to apply gentle pressure to move the tooth in a specific direction.

    Not all teeth may need them, it depends on what movements are needed and that is why every treatment plan is unique.

  • Invisalign consists of a series of removable clear plastic trays that you can take in and out of the mouth, whereas braces consist of brackets and wires attached to the teeth, which cannot be removed for the duration of treatment.

    The fact that you can remove the Invisalign aligners (required for when you eat and drink) means that, unlike traditional braces, you do not need to restrict your consumption of any of your favourite foods, which could cause traditional braces to break. You should brush your teeth after each meal to remove any food and plaque that may be present before re-inserting your aligners to maintain fresh breath and prevent tooth decay.

    The aligners need to be worn for at least 22 hours per day to be most effective and removed only for eating, drinking anything that isn’t water, brushing and flossing. If they are not worn, the teeth will not move. They are amazing, but they don’t perform miracles by just sitting in the box!

    Braces with brackets and wires are capable of more complex movements and are the superior treatment option for more complex cases that need large/difficult movements of teeth.

  • Although the name may suggest that they are, they are not completely invisible, but are a nearly invisible clear plastic. They’re not grey metal and are much less noticeable compared to traditional braces. Invisalign is very subtle, so nobody may even notice you’re wearing the aligners. Usually your friends or colleagues will notice your new smile before they notice the aligners on your teeth.
